Pure silver (also called fine silver) is too soft for most jewellery applications. Sterling silver solves this by alloying 92.5% pure silver with 7.5% other metals — usually copper — to create a material that is both beautiful and durable. This is why sterling silver is stamped "925."
Tarnish is a natural chemical reaction. When silver comes into contact with sulphur compounds in the air, moisture, or certain chemicals, a thin layer of silver sulphide forms on the surface.
Common causes of tarnish include:
The simplest and safest method. After each wear, gently wipe your silver jewellery with a soft, lint-free cloth. A microfibre cloth or a dedicated silver polishing cloth works best.
Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into warm water. Soak the jewellery for 5–10 minutes, gently clean with a soft-bristled brush, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry with a soft cloth.
Mix 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water to form a thick paste. Apply with a soft cloth, rub gently in straight lines, rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
Line a glass bowl with aluminium foil, place your silver jewellery on it, sprinkle baking soda, and pour boiling water over everything. Let it sit for 2–5 minutes, then rinse and dry.
Sterling silver is an investment in beauty that rewards attention. A few minutes of care each week is all it takes to keep your pieces looking radiant for years.
