What Is Sterling Silver?
Pure silver (also called fine silver) is too soft for most jewellery applications. Sterling silver solves this by alloying 92.5% pure silver with 7.5% other metals — usually copper — to create a material that is both beautiful and durable. This is why sterling silver is stamped "925."
Why Does Sterling Silver Tarnish?
Tarnish is a natural chemical reaction. When silver comes into contact with sulphur compounds in the air, moisture, or certain chemicals, a thin layer of silver sulphide forms on the surface.
Common causes of tarnish include:
- Humidity and air exposure — silver left out in open air tarnishes faster in humid climates
- Body chemistry — sweat, skin oils, and pH levels vary from person to person
- Chemicals — perfume, hairspray, deodorant, cleaning products, and chlorine
- Certain foods — sulphur-rich foods like eggs and onions
- Rubber and latex — these materials contain sulphur
How to Clean Sterling Silver Jewellery
Method 1: Soft Cloth (Daily Maintenance)
The simplest and safest method. After each wear, gently wipe your silver jewellery with a soft, lint-free cloth. A microfibre cloth or a dedicated silver polishing cloth works best.
Method 2: Warm Water and Mild Soap
Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into warm water. Soak the jewellery for 5–10 minutes, gently clean with a soft-bristled brush, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry with a soft cloth.
Method 3: Baking Soda Paste (Moderate Tarnish)
Mix 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water to form a thick paste. Apply with a soft cloth, rub gently in straight lines, rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
Method 4: Aluminium Foil Bath (Heavy Tarnish)
Line a glass bowl with aluminium foil, place your silver jewellery on it, sprinkle baking soda, and pour boiling water over everything. Let it sit for 2–5 minutes, then rinse and dry.
How to Store Sterling Silver Properly
- Use anti-tarnish bags or cloth — these absorb sulphur compounds
- Store pieces separately — prevents scratches between pieces
- Keep it dry — add silica gel packets to your jewellery box
- Wear it — natural oils create a protective layer
Daily Habits for Long-Lasting Silver
- Put jewellery on last — after applying perfume, lotion, hairspray
- Take it off first — before showering, swimming, exercising
- Wipe after wearing — a quick pass with a soft cloth
- Store properly — in anti-tarnish pouches, separated from other pieces
Sterling silver is an investment in beauty that rewards attention. A few minutes of care each week is all it takes to keep your pieces looking radiant for years.
